In higher education, theses and dissertations are a cherished academic genre, with the quality of its students' intellectual products being a key indicator of the quality of the university itself. In particular, a university's standing is based in large measure on its ability to suppoit original research, all of which is dutifully preserved in the library's special collections. Although the introduction of microfilm, typewriters and word processing during the last 50 years have helped increase circulation, in general theses have remained a treasured but underused resource.
