Brazilian leather will implement a series of important initiatives throughout 2015, with projects that are sure to be determinant of a new moment that the Brazilian leather industry is about to experience. Through the Brazilian Leather Project - an initiative of the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil) for the promotion of leather exports - a number of actions focused on sustainability are to take place. And there are a series of projects that stand out in this scenario. The Brazilian Leather Certification of Sustainability (CSCB) is a highlight. It will define the standards for leather sustainability and qualify; train companies within the sector under those requirements; and promote the best production practices in order to strengthen Brazilian leather in the domestic and international markets. It is a programme of excellence that will define a new moment for the national industry and consumers alike. After more than two years of intense research, innovation and dedication, CSCB had its norms built through a special study commission (CEE), with contributions from tanneries, manufacturing industries, technicians and education institutions. These norms were released for public consultation by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT), and then published. After that, a conformity evaluation assessment (RAC) was created by the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro), which defines how tanneries are to be certified. After validation, certification organisms are to be credited for auditing.
