摘要

Inexpensive mobile computers developed through projects such as the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) initiative, the Intel Classmate project, and the Asus EEE netbook make one-to-one computing ratios increasingly realistic. Electronic books are an obvious application for scenarios in which every child has a computer. Some pioneering school districts have already begun to experiment with adoption of electronic books in place of printed texts. E-books offer certain opportunities and advantages, but there are a number of potential pitfalls as well. The best time to consider the rights of readers is prior to adoption on a broader scale. Because of their collective purchasing power, school districts could potentially exert a positive influence on adoption standards that will benefit all readers.
