Digital Literacies: Social Learning and Classroom Practice is an edited volume sponsored by the UK Literacy Association's interest group on digital technologies and classroom practices, of which most of the contributors are members. The volume's intended audience includes pre- and in-service educators and those pursuing graduate degrees. A coherent theoretical thread informed by such consonant perspectives as new literacies, multiliteracies, multimodality, participatory media culture, communities of practice, situated learning and cultural studies further informs the chapters, all of which saliently highlight the social construction of knowledge. This consistency provides a glue that binds the chapters into a clearly aligned volume, although some contributors' penchant for jargon detracts from the chapters' maximal usefulness to practitioners. That said, the chapters together present a well-rounded, theoretically consistent grounding in relevant literature with enough useful implications for practitioners to warrant the volume's inclusion in teacher education courses or for supplementary or personal reading by interested teacher-researchers. The book would also be useful for master's students in other fields of education related to understanding literacy learning, new media or educational technology.
