A series of glacial ridges guides the striking walls and terraces carved out of these five acres, which took shape along with the new house, barn, pool, and outbuildings on the Westwood, Massachusetts, property. The terraces, which drop down from north to south from a high ridge to a woodland swale, build on the east-west run of the ridges. A watercourse runs down the change in grade and takes drainage off the buildings and the upper part of the site, and then it cascades seven feet down through the main site wall to a long, narrow water garden. Native aquatic plants scrub the water as it flows, and the water continues down to the swale, where it filters into the ground. Frogs, turtles, and bugs have found homes in the wet areas. Elsewhere on the grounds are a small apple orchard, a vegetable garden, and wildflower meadows. "It's got modesty and restraint," one juror said. "A farmlike aspect comes into the vocabulary that is friendly."
