CSIRO develops 100% cotton functional base-layer

Scientists at die Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) have developed a 100% cotton knitted base-layer designed to keep athletes dry during vigorous exercise. Sweat is transported through the hydrophobic inner layer to the hydrophilic outer face where it spreads, drying quickly, to keep the wearer cool. The knitting structure maximises separation of the inner and outer faces of the fabric, whilst the chemical treatments applied during the dyeing process increase the hydrophobicity of the cotton yarns.
