Since 1994 interdisciplinary and consumer related investigations have been realized under the guidance of the Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Forestry to examine the occurrence of polychlorinated dibenzodioxines and dibenzofuranes (called dioxines hereinafter) in foodstuffs. In 1997/98 the substrate fish was analyzed. For the total investigated material (161 samples) the arithmetic mean value was at approx. 0.5 pg iTE/g in fresh or wet weight. In detail this means an arithmetic mean of 0.458 pg iTE/g in fresh weight for the 114 samples of fish (including Crustacea and molluscs) and of 0.459 pg iTE/g in fresh weight for the remaining 47 samples of fish products. Compared with data from earlier investigations, these findings show a significant decrease of the PCDD/F load of this foodstuff thus allowing the conclusion that the contamination has decreased in the various fishing zones. The results confirm that limiting the emissions is the right measure to solve the "dioxine issue".
