Notes on Nepal's Creative Basketry

This amazing little 38 page book packs in a huge amount of information, both through its handwritten, yet easy-to-read, text and its photographs. After a brief introduction setting the techniques described in their geographical and socio-economic context, some of the raw materials used to create the baskets are discussed. Subsequent chapters describe both use and weaving methods for some of the traditional baskets which have been in use for generations. These include the doko basket, used to carry weights of 40-80kg, and other baskets such as the thunse and kharpan, for lesser hand-carried loads. Baskets for containment include the dalo, and other baskets used for tasks such as filtering, winnowing and as rainshields are described, as well as mats for all purposes. The information included is concise yet practical; this is not a beginner's how-to guide but easily used by someone already practising basketry. Ample anecdotal information and photographs add interest.
