Annabel Wilson, an expert in the ancient Japanese art of shibori, recently gave a talk to the West Surrey Guild about shibori stitch resist. She brought with her a selection of finished examples of fabrics and lamps to show how this technique can be used to beautiful effect. Annabel explained that she spends the day sewing fabric and then taking out all the stitches. In between, she dyes the stitched fabric. A design is drawn onto plain white fabric and then stitched according to the effect desired. We were shown the patterns made by using different stitches, such as a delicate fern effect obtained from a simple row of running stitches. A piece of fabric bunched up by stitching emerges from the dye with a design inspired by nature and beautifully realised, such as the seed-head designs on the lamps. The lamps are particularly attractive because the designs are lit from behind and the colours appear to glow.
