摘要

According to traditional historiography, the French were genuinely committed to creating an integrated Europe in the early 1950s, modelled according to the principles proclaimed in the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950. This article aligns itself instead with the thesis proposed by the British historian Alan Milward, according to which the aim of France's European integration project was, from its very start, to strengthen the nation-state and not to substitute a federal European structure for it.1 1. Examples of the classical historiography are Pierre Gerbet, La construction de l'Europe (Paris: Imprimerie Nationale, 1999) and Raymond Poidevin, Robert Schuman, homme d'état (1886-1963). (Paris, Imprimerie Nationale: 1986). By Alan Milward, see: The European Rescue of the Nation-State (Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 1992). For the French, federalism was a tool of policy rather than an end in its own right.View full textDownload full textKeywordsECSE, EDC, Schuman Declaration, Pleven Plan, West German rearmament, Adenauer, Mendès-FranceRelated var addthis_config = { ui_cobrand: "Taylor & Francis Online", services_compact: "citeulike, netvibes, twitter, technorati, delicious, linkedin, facebook, stumbleupon, digg, google, more", pubid: "ra-4dff56cd6bb1830b" }; Add to shortlist Link Permalink http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/14794010903533925
