Author Colin B. Burke is noted for his histories of cryptology and computers. He is one of six historians selected to become "Scholar in Residence" at the National Security Agency and one of two granted a top-secret clearance for his research in 1991-1992. This research resulted in the authoring of the document "NSA Codebreaking Secrets Revealed: It Wasn't All Magic - The Early Struggle to Automate Cryptanalysis 1930s-1960s" - Alan Turing, Vannevar Bush, First Electronic Computers, World War Ⅱ Codes, 2002. This document was originally classified "Top Secret" and then downgraded in 2013 to "unclassified" (Burke, 2002). The book is significant and unique in both the fields of intelligence and information science, as it documents the development of systems at OSS/CIA which impacted future information retrieval, and it details the many conferences and meeting which were responsible for the evolving US science information policy.
