This article deals with reliability growth that can be achieved prior to the occurrence of failures that are "discovered" during testing or subsequent customer use. The definitions of A-modes (failure modes in design that will not be mitigated) and B-modes (failure modes in design that will be mitigated "immediately" (BC-modes), or delayed (BD-modes)) that occur during testing have been developed by others as a means for measuring reliability growth, and projecting reliability growth potential, during the Developmental and Operational test phases of military systems.
