Bridgeport Connecticut's Great Fire of 1845 started at George Wells' Oyster Saloon on Bank Street and spread rapidly through the city's waterfront. Due to lack of available water, forty-nine wooden buildings were destroyed before the fire burned itself out. Eight years later, the Bridgeport Water Company was formed to provide water supply for residential and fire protection needs. The company constructed Bunnell Pond (now a city park) on the Pequonnock River and started laying water mains under the city streets. Bridgeport Water Company went out of business a short time later, but in 1857 an investor-owned water company called Bridgeport Hydraulic Company (renamed Aquarion Water Company) was formed and took over the defunct company's assets.
