Talk Of The Nation: Language And Conflict In Romania And Slovakia

Romania and Slovakia exemplify the problems of minority languages in formerly Communist Europe. Both have sizable populations with mother tongues different from Romanian and Slovak, respectively, and the minorities in both countries speak a plurality of languages. This book is timely, given the recent and forthcoming expansionist steps of the European Union. It concentrates on 'Hungarians', who make up the largest minorities in both countries - by the latest censuses, over 1.5 million (6.6% of the population) in Romania, and half a million (9.7%) in Slovakia.
