This paper describes a new method for production of carbides from refractory metals (B, W and Ti). The main feature of the method is production of carbides using precursors (initial substance): oxides of the corresponding metal coated with carbon hydrogen containing substance (CHCS). It was proved that polyvinyl alcohol is suitable for obtaining CHCS whereas polypropylene and phenol formaldehyde resin are not suitable. The carbothermal reduction is studied during thermal treatment of two different samples in inert atmosphere: i) a mixture of powders: metal oxide plus graphite; ii) a coated powder. The carbothermal reduction of the oxides depends on how the carbon is added in the process. Carbothermal reduction of boron oxide is not observed up to temperatures 1545 K.
