I am pleased to be able to report that the IASS has concluded its 50th year in fine fashion with its Jubilee Symposium in Valencia, September 28 — October 2. As has been traditional, every tenth year our annual symposium is held in Spain, but this marks the first time that it has been held in a city other than Madrid, the site of the founding of the Association in 1959 under the leadership of Eduardo Torroja. This beautiful and dynamic city proved to be an excellent venue, and we were grateful to be hosted by the Polytechnic University of Valencia with the support of CEDEX and several other sponsors and endorsers. A report of the symposium is included in this issue of the Journal so only the aspects of broad significance to the IASS are highlighted here.
