Design of Bare-hand Gestures for Object Manipulation in Virtual Reality

With the advancement of markerless motion capture technology in recent years, gesture-based interactive technique has come into people's daily life. In this paper, we conducted a two-stage study on the design of bare-hand gestures in Virtual Reality environment. In the first study, end users were asked to invent bare-hand gestures for the manipulation of virtual objects freely by themselves. Based on the experimental results, we established baseline criteria to distinguish different types of bare-hand gestures and then derived a user-defined gesture set from the collected data. In the second study, the user-defined gestures were validated in terms of good match, memorability, learnability, and comfort. Participants showed positive attitudes toward the user-defined gesture set. Finally, we report some design guidelines for gesture design and vision-based interface design.
