AIRCRAFT trajectory optimization is a subject of greatrnimportance in air traffic management from the point of view ofrndefining optimal flight procedures that lead to energy-efficientrnflights. In practice, the airlines consider a cost index (CI) and definernthe direct operating cost (DOC) as the combined cost of fuel con-rnsumed and flight time weighted by the CI. Their goal is to minimizernthe DOC. However, in the presence of unexpected winds, the flightrntimemay differ considerably fromthe scheduled time,which leads tornan arrival-error cost that can be added to the DOC to obtain the totalrncost (TC).
