As Souvik Mukherjee makes clear in Video Games and Storytelling (2015), ludologists see story elements and narratologists see gameplay elements as prostheses to the other when examining video games. He explains how, to ludologists such as Steven Poole and Markku Eskelinen, storytelling is 'prosthetic to the playing experience' (2015: 10) - meaning, the story exists within the game, but studies of the game itself should be centered first and foremost on the eame nlav elements.
