NATURAL AND ANTHROPIC RESOURCES USED IN SUSTAINABLE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT IN OLTENIA

The Oltenia region, a historical province and geographical region located in the southwestern Romania, stretches about 29 212 km2. It is situated between the Danube, the Southern Carpathians and the Olt river. The counties of Oltenia are Dolj, Olt, Valcea, Mehedinti and Gorj. Oltenia is a beautiful region, a Romanian corner of nature with many attractions. The northern part of this region is known as an important ethno-folkloric area. The villages economy still relies on traditional crafts: clay processing, pottering, wood carving and sculpture, carpentry, coopers. The natural tourism resources of the Oltenia region consist of a great variety of landforms and the unequalled beauty of the natural landscape, from the rich biodiversity - flora and fauna - to the unique geodiversity represented by the Jiu and Olt valleys. Due to its significant contribution to the general economic recovery, tourism was approached by all significant actors as one of the priority sectors of the Romanian economy. This paper aims not only at identifying the main the strategic elements of development for the touristic sector in the south-western region of Romania, but also at making a short review of the environmental infrastructure, of the access roads to the most important touristic destinations, the level of pollution, the main sources of pollution, the national and the regional environmental and touristic politics.
