Legal Reasoning in Environmental Law: A Study of Structure, Form and Language

In his highly amusing debut novel, Lucky Jim, Kingsley Amis succeeds in highlighting the challenges and tribulations faced by academic scholars. In the opening chapter Amis's academic protagonist, the rebellious Jim Dixon, alerts us to the problems encountered by scholars when it comes to developing new insights by pondering a recent article of his own in the following honest terms; 'it was a perfect title, in that it crystallised the article's niggling mindlessness, its funereal parade of yawn-enforcing facts, the pseudo-light it threw upon non-problems' (p 14). Legal Reasoning in Environmental Law is clearly a step up from Jim Dixon's work but unfortunately only in part. The reason for this is perhaps to be found in the dissonance between the book's objectives and the way in which it ultimately goes about achieving these.
