Time-averaged and phase-locked velocity measurements allow a comprehensive analysis of the complex three-dimensional flow patterns within a centrifugal fan. The time-averaged measure-ments highlight the development of a pair of counter-rotating vor-tices that are convected along the volute. Comparison of the mean flow fields at two different Reynolds numbers confirms that the overall flow features remain similar if the ratio of the blade tip to outlet velocity is held constant. Nevertheless, differences were observed in the flow surrounding the volute cutoff, where flow reversal occurred at the lower Reynolds number.
