Treatment of Vertebral Occipital Muscles Injury by Acupuncture and Massage

The patient, male, 36 years old, complained of dizziness, nausea, and pain and discomfort of neck and occiput because of leaning against high pillow to watch TV for hours the day before. The examination showed that the obvious tenderness could be found in the inferior nuchal line, and when he bent his head passively, dizziness and pain of occiput could be aggravated, it was diagnosed as vertebral occipital muscles injury. Then he was treated by needling bilateral acupoints Fengchi (GB 20),Tianzhu(BL 10), Houxi(SI 3) and Ashi points in the inferior nuchal line plus TDP irradiation on the local region for 30 min, after withdrawal of needles, Dian-finger pressing and Rou-stationary circular pressing, Bo-plucking and Bashen-traction were conducted on the areas of spinous process and transverse process of the first and second cervical vertebrae, finally, he was asked to sit with the head upward slightly, the practitioner pressed the acupoint Fengchi(GB 20) with the thumb and index finger of left hand and held the patient's low chin with right hand to slightly bend the head forward and applied traction with both hands to lift the neck upward simultaneously, in this way, the patient felt that the pain disappeared, with normal mentality and lustrous eyes, following a treatment, he was cured.
