Greater co-operation with industry is needed to improve the operational availability of the UK Royal Navy's (RN's) nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) fleet, according to the incoming head of the UK's Submarine Service. Speaking at the Defence & Security Equipment International (DSEI) exhibition in London on 12 September, Rear Admiral Paul Halton, who is currently the RN's Commander Operations and takes over from Rear Admiral John Weale as Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Submarines) and Rear Admiral Submarines later this year, said the availability of UK attack submarines was "quite taught at the moment".
