Qatar unveils plans for new naval base

The Qatar Emiri Naval Forces (QENF) is planning to establish a new naval base as the service procures more capable vessels, such as the Buraq interceptor craft, and expands its personnel strength. To be built on reclaimed land south of Doha, the base will cover an area of approximately 4.5 km2 and is expected to be completed by 2016, project director Makor Saleh a-Saei told MS Jane's. The main feature is a ship basin measuring 1,300x500 m with an adjacent covered dock and shiplift. Facilities will be provided for all QENF departments, including naval special forces, an enlarged naval academy and maintenance and other support services.
