Engine swap promises increased power, efficiency for BMP-2

Israel-based Nimda released initial details at the annual AUSA exhibition in Washington, DC, of a new, more powerful diesel power-pack it is developing for the widely deployed Russian BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV). This BMP-2 is currently powered by a 300 hp straight six UTD-20, a manual transmission with five forward and one reverse gears, and a 5.5:1 final drive. This is sufficient for a maximum road speed of up to 65 km/h, an unrefueled range of around 550 km, and a power-to-weight ratio of 20.3 hp/tonne (from a gross vehicle weight of 14.3 tonnes). The new Nimda powerpack consists of a new cooling system, a 400 hp 6.4 litre Maxx-Force 7 V8 diesel driving the tracks through an Allison X-200 series automatic transmission, linked to the legacy BMP-2 IFV final drive.
