French Defence Ministry prepares for major job cuts

France is to eliminate as many as 50,000 jobs within its defence ministry during the course of its forthcoming 2009-14 military allocation programme in order to free up cash to buy new defence equipment. Government sources said officials were planning to cut the defence ministry's current 426,000-strong payroll by between 20,000 and 50,000 staff over the six-year period ending in 2014.
