Three former Turkish generals and nine currently serving officers of various ranks were among around 40 people detained by Turkish police on 7 January in simultaneous raids staged in six cities. The raids widen a 19-month-long probe into an alleged plot by staunch secularists to overthrow the Islam-based government. The retired generals detained were former undersecretary of the Turkish Ministry of National Defence and former secretary general of the National Security Council Tuncer Kilmc, former 2nd Army commander Kemal Yavuz and former legal counsel to the Turkish General Staff (TGS) Erdal Senel, while the nine officers included four colonels, according to the state-run Anatolian news agency.
