First German Heron 1 arrives in Afghanistan

The first of three Heron 1 medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicles to be operated by Germany in Afghanistan arrived in Mazar-e-Sharif in February and is scheduled to become operational by mid-March.rnThis marks the beginning of unmanned MALE flights by the Luftwaffe, the service said in announcing the deployment.rnThe three Heron 1s will operate alongside and complement the six Luftwaffe Tornado Recce aircraft already based at Mazar-e-Sharif.
