Expanding defence budgets, regional rivalries, and burgeoning defence industrial capabilities are leading many countries in the Asia-Pacific region to not only introduce new AFVs but also to start manufacturing their own platforms. Notably, several nations have begun to operate main battle tanks (MBTs), the marquee platform by which land forces are often judged. Indonesia recently received from Rheinmetall its first Krauss-Maffei Wegmann Leopard 2 MBT, while Singapore already has a variant of the Leopard 2 in service.
