NATO invites Montenegro into the alliance

NATO invited Montenegro to become its newest member during a meeting of allied foreign ministers in Brussels on 2 December. The invitation for Montenegro to join the alliance comes after the completion of a membership action plan (MAP) phase of pre-qualification for NATO membership. Now that the invitation has been issued, the allies will launch accession talks with Montenegro in early 2016, according to NATO. Once these talks have been concluded, all the allies will have to sign an accession protocol for Montenegro's membership. This will then need ratification by each of the 28 allies' legislatures, after which Montenegro will be able to sign the Washington Treaty and become a formal member of the alliance.
