A CONTESTED LIFE: JAMES CONNOLLY IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY

James Connolly may have been executed in 1916 but his meaning and legacy remain hotly contested. This issue of Interventions is but one of several recent attempts to reclaim and reinvent Connolly for the new millennium. This review essay examines three projects that re-evaluate who Connolly was, what he did, and what he represented: Donal Nevin's 2005 biography James Connolly: A Full Life, the forthcoming biopic Connolly by Tom Stokes and Frank Allen, currently in production and due for release in 2008, and Ken Loach's 2006 film The Wind that Shakes the Barley.
