NZ government mulls Auckland tunnel plan

THE business case for a $NZ 2.3 billion ($US 1.75 billion) cross-city rail link under Auckland is being scrutinised by the New Zealand government. Transport minister Mr Steven Joyce has questioned the viability of the 3.5km double-track tunnel, which would run from Bntomart underground station to the western line near Mount Eden. The alignment was revealed last November by Auckland mayor Mr Len Brown, who described the project as "the most critical element" for improving the city's competitive position.
