The processes of deformation and failure of commonly used thermosetting and thermosoftening plastics, including fluoroplastic, polycaprolactam, organic glass, Getinaks resin-dipped laminated plastic insulating material, and resin-dipped fabric laminate, under uniaxial elongation were investigated by acoustic emission techniques. The results are discussed in terms of determination of the onset of ductile cracking causing failure in brittle materials or of the forced elasticity limit in plastic materials together with the corresponding load. 9 refs.
