The systems of knowledge that form the core of what was taught in schools and universities in the 20th century were built using some representational infrastructures that were instantiated in and hence subject to the constraints of the static, inert media of the previous several millennia. But, the computational medium is neither static nor inert, but rather, is dynamic and interactive, exploiting the great new advances of the 20th century, autonomously executable processes - that is, operations on symbol systems not requiring a human partner.
