Computer Usage of Business Schools and Corporations: a Taiwan Case

To study the differences of the computer usage between business schools and corporations, a survey was conducted by sending questionnaires to the 102 departments of the 16 business schools and the 500 largest corporations in Taiwan. From the information gathered from 68 departments and 229 corporations, a comprehensive comparison is made. In particular, business schools rely heavily on microcomputers, the ratio of the quantity of micros to non-micros is approximately three times of that of corporations. Regarding software packages, business schools are very consistent with corporations, with leading application packages as: IBM Personal Editor for word processing, dBase for database management, Lotus 1-2-3 for spreadsheet analysis, and SAS for statistical analysis. The programming language in corporations is dominated by Cobol whereas in business schools there are two most popular languages, Basic and Cobol. Finally, it is interesting to note that the very popular technique of statistics in business schools is not widespread in corporations.
