The rehabilitation or replacement of existing dams is likely to play an important role in Korea's future water resources development plans. Several schemes are now under consideration for upgrading, to increase irrigation and urban and industrial water supplies. New dam construction in Korea is limited at present because of negative perceptions by NGOs and local residents. Therefore rehabilitation is becoming more important to avoid the need for new construction and to secure additional water supplies and flood control. Rehabilitation schemes generally involve increasing the reservoir storage capacity, changing the reservoir operating regime, and improving operation and maintenance by increasing the dam height and dredging the reservoir. As an alternative way of developing water resources, Korea is actively involved in dam rehabilitation to maximize the use of existing dam facilities. Thus, in establishing a long-term dam development plan, projects to increase the height of dams are reviewed along with new dam construction plans.
