It is fair to say that existing media policies are under pressure. Fast technological, economic and social changes render well-entrenched policy instruments in the audio-visual and print sectors obsolete or at least make the policy objectives they pursue more difficult to achieve. In Understanding Media Policies: A European Perspective editor Evangelia Psychogiopoulou brings together an impressive number of country studies. These describe and critically evaluate the regulatory practices, policy tools and institutional features of media policies in Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, the United Kingdom, Croatia and Turkey. The evaluation of media policies in these countries is strongly connected to the politics of media policy, which is a recommendable feature of this edited collection that has indeed adopted a 'law-in-context' approach and is, hence, interesting to read for not only media lawyers, but a vast part of the media studies community. The law-in-context approach covers print media, broadcasting and new media. This increases the relevance of this collection significantly as most contributions in the media policy and/or law subdiscipline tend to focus on either print media, broadcasting or new media or on the relation between print and new media on the one hand and broadcasting and new media on the other hand.
