NOMURA recorded its strongest first three quarters for a fiscal year in at least 19 years as its third-quarter profit soared, primarily due to a solid performance from its wholesale division. Japan's pre-eminent investment bank said net profit for the nine months to the end of December was ¥308.5bn (US$2.94bn), up 23% year-on-year and its highest level since at least the year ended March 2002, when Nomura started reporting under US GAAP. Net profit for the October-December quarter jumped 72% to ¥98.4bn as Nomura's three main divisions - retail, asset management and wholesale - recorded their highest combined quarterly pre-tax profit since the first quarter of the 2007/08 fiscal year, shortly before the global financial crisis hit.
