Canada Developing Regulations to Manage Wastewater; Final Rules Expected in 2010

Canada is developing new regulations to manage municipal wastewater as a step toward improving protection of the nation's fresh water resources, Environment Minister Jim Prentice said Aug. 6. Prentice said the proposed regulations would set out national performance standards, time lines, and monitoring and reporting requirements for more than 4,000 wastewater facilities. The government plans to publish the proposals in December in the Canada Gazette, Part I, and expects to implement finalized regulations in 2010, according to the minister.
