Indian Court Orders Standards Bureau To Set Phthalate Limits for Plastic Toys

The Bombay High Court, the highest court in Maharashtra state, has ordered the Bureau of Indian Standards to set limits for the permissible amount of phthalates in plastic toys by June 30 (Consumer Welfare Assoc. v. Union of India, No. 79 of 2007 (March 24, 2011)). Disposing of a case filed by the Consumer Welfare Association in 2007, the High Court March 24 ordered the federal Ministry of Commerce and its Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion to issue a notification making the limits mandatory within two months after they are set by the Bureau of Indian Standards. The court left the specific levels up to the bureau.
