French innovation: Building on springs

The new headquarters of France Tele-vision is being built resting on an 'acoustic' (or anti-vibration) cast wall, supported horizontally by 300 spring boxes. This is probably a world first, constructed in a difficult urban environment and complying with strict planning regulations. The Citroen Cevennes integrated development zone, close to the Garigliano bridge in Paris, is host to two key building projects: the Georges Pompidou hospital and the new headquarters of France Television. This latter building is triangular in shape, with the recording studios on the ground floor. Many acoustical difficulties have therefore been encountered during construction.
