A Data Aggregation Security Enhancing Scheme in WSNs Using Homomorphic Encryption

Communication between sensor nodes in wireless sensor network (WSN) consumes a considerable amount of energy; a solution that aims to reduce this consumption is data aggregation. It reduces the number of messages transmitted in the network by combining the data from various sensors of the network. However, ensuring security in conjunction with aggregation techniques is a challenge, because the nodes and aggregators are deployed in hostile environments and are exposed to many attacks. For this, the security of data aggregation such as confidentiality and integrity should be considered. Based on homomorphic primitives, this paper proposes an efficient secure data aggregation scheme suitable for WSNs, which can protect end-to-end data confidentiality and integrity. In addition, by utilizing homomorphic message authentication codes (HMACs) combined with the Elliptic Curve ElGamal algorithm, this scheme can also verify data integrity and so that false data can be detected as early as possible. The security of our scheme are theoretically analyzed and compared with other schemes, the communication overhead and energy consumption are reduced, thus prolongs the life of the sensor nodes and network.
