When Fidelity Investments International launched its first Indian mutual fund early last year, it was entering a crowded market. The country's investors already had a choice of more than 430 funds from 29 fund management companies, ranging from major Indian outfits like UTI Asset Management Co. to global heavyweights like Franklin Templeton Asset Management. Still, Fidelity executives were convinced that India's buoyant economy and rapidly expanding investor base would provide plenty of opportunity for a new player.
