The latest article in our series of NDT ex-pats features Brian E Shannon, who was born in Enniskillen in Northern Ireland. After leaving high school in 1970, Brian moved to Belfast, where he was engaged as an engineering apprentice and attended the College of Technology (now the University of Ulster) while working for Harland &Wolff at the famous shipyard which built the Titanic. He worked as a Welding Engineer for five years, during the construction of Onassis super tankers. In 1975, Brian sought new horizons and moved to St John, New Brunswick, in Canada, where he spent a year working on a Foster Wheeler Refinery expansion project. Then it was back to the UK and northern Scotland for the construction of offshore platforms for a year, during which time he became aware of the important role that nondestructive testing was playing in the evaluation of weld quality.
