Kendall calls for DSB study on software application for major weapon systems

The Defense Department's acquisition chief has tasked an influential advisory panel with looking into the design and acquisition of software for major weapon systems. In an Aug. 3 terms of reference memo made public last week, Frank Kendall called on the Defense Science Board to take a look at the current state of the Pentagon's software acquisition efforts and "recommend practical actions to improve performance by the DOD and its suppliers." "The department has always been challenged to develop software intensive products within cost and schedule and with the desired performance," Kendall wrote in the memo. "Cyber security, steadily increased functionality (including artificial intelligence and autonomy features), and a growing desire for tightly networked systems all lead to more complex software intensive programs."
