About twenty years ago I was at a conference on the marketing of high-tech products. During the evening reception one of the conference co-chairs took me aside and told me that the welcoming speaker for the following morning had taken ill and could not give the welcoming address and wondered if I could pinch hit for him. He said that the topic for the talk would be "What is High-Tech?" Not wanting to disappoint him, I agreed to give the presentation. The rest of the reception was spent gathering ideas from the conference attendees. Almost everyone to whom I posed the question: "What is high-tech?" had a different response.
