Trace Elemental Analysis of Aerosols Samples Using the Particle-Induced X-ray Emission Technique

Trace element analysis was carried out in the aerosol samples using particle induced x-ray emission (PIXE) technique. A 2 MeV proton beam was employed to excite the samples. The element K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br and Pb were identified and their concentrations were estimated. The concentrations of Pb, Mn and Ni are high in the aerosol samples collected from NAD Kotha Road area compared to the control area. The higher levels of these elements are due to effluent gases released from nearby industries and smelters. The high level of Zn observed in Gajuwaka area is attributed to the presence of Hindustan Zinc Limited and other industries located near the sampling station. In the Port area, the concentrations of all the elements except Ti and Br are observed to be higher when compared to control area. The high levels of elements observed in the Port area are attributed to several Port operations. Seasonal variation of pollutant levels in aerosols is also studied. It is observed that the elemental concentrations in summer are higher than those in winter.
