This paper describes a new method for superimposing virtualnobjects with correct shadings onto an image of a real scene. Unlike thenpreviously proposed methods, our method can measure a radiancendistribution of a real scene automatically and use it for superimposingnvirtual objects appropriately onto a real scene. First, a geometricnmodel of the scene is constructed from a pair of omnidirectional imagesnby using an omnidirectional stereo algorithm. Then, radiance of thenscene is computed from a sequence of omnidirectional images taken withndifferent shutter speeds and mapped onto the constructed geometricnmodel. The radiance distribution mapped onto the geometric model is usednfor rendering virtual objects superimposed onto the scene image. As anresult, even for a complex radiance distribution, our method cannsuperimpose virtual objects with convincing shadings and shadows castnonto the real scene. We successfully tested the proposed method by usingnreal images to show its effectiveness
