Photoinduced birefringence is proposed as a tool for mode-controlnapplications in integrated optical devices such as waveguides, fibers,netc. Various geometries of photoexposure are theoretically considerednfor the example of a planar waveguide. Analytical solutions are obtainednthat provide information about the resulting polarizational behavior ofnthe guide. The presence of birefringent Bragg gratings is thennconsidered and conditions are identified to obtainnpolarization-insensitive spectral filters
